About

I live with my family in Wicklow. In 2004 I graduated with an MA in Writing (Distinction) from Middlesex University. In 2008 I became the first Writer in Residence for the charity InterAct Stroke Support, who employ actors to read fiction and poetry to stroke patients. I’m now one of their Trustees and co-judge their bi-annual story competitions.

My short fiction received a Uk Arts Council Writing Award in 2006, and in 2023 I received an Irish Arts Council Literature Bursary Award  to work on collection of memoir essays.  My writing has won prizes and been widely published, including recently in The Stinging Fly, Banshee, Southword, The Lonely Crowd, Sonder and Exacting Clam magazines. Work has also appeared in Salt’s Best British Short Stories, A Wild and Precious Life – A Recovery Anthology, Modern Nature Anthology – Responses to Derek Jarman’s Modern Nature, The Poetry Bus, The Sunday Express Magazine, The Bridport and Fish Prize Anthologies, Popshot, Litro and Confingo.

My writing has also been published online in many places, including Époque Press’s e-zines, Words for the Wild, 3:AM Magazine, Dead Drunk Dublin, Books Ireland, Trasna, Culture Matters, The Quietus, Fictive Dream, The Willesden Herald and Found Polaroids.

My story ‘Fire Starter’ came Second in the 2022 Francis MacManus RTÉ Short Story Competition, ‘Boys on Film’ came Second in the 2023 Plaza Sudden Fiction Prize, and ‘Eric Lucastees’ came Third in the 2025 Plaza Short Story Prize judged by Damon Galgut. Other stories have won the Ruth Rendell InterAct Stroke Support Story Competition, Belfast’s Duncairn Theatre’s  Shadows and Light Flash Story Competition (Joint First), The Liverpool International Short Story Competition and the Middlesex Literary Festival Story Prize.

My short play scenes ‘Stealing a Kiss’ and ‘Diagnoses’ were  performed at The Cork Arts Theatre in December 2024 and May 2025.

DOGSBODIES and SCUMSTERS , my collection of short stories with flash shorts inspired by Jonny Voss’s pictures, was published by Roast Books and long-listed for the Edge Hill Prize.

Jonny Voss and I also collaborate on illustrated shorts known as Scumsters – see more at  Deaddrunkdublin and Scumsters.blogspot

  2. Hello Alan,
I loved your Stinging Fly piece ‘Ghosts of St Francis’ – so very moving and evocative, and sensitively written. Thank you.

(I live in Lewes, so was familiar with many of the places described.)

Hi David, thanks for taking the trouble to write about the SF piece. Do you remember seeing St Francis Hospital as a child? I think it must have closed in the late nineteen eighties? I loved going to Lewes, The Lewes Arms and Pells pool – and the walk there over the Downs from Ditchling Beacon ps that marathon time is extraordinary!
